a wide variety of settings and populations, including: Attachment
therapy for foster/adopted children, Therapy for trauma and abuse
victims, Therapy for children with behavioural and developmental
problems, and Group settings such as preschools, daycare settings,

3. Introduction to
TheraplayŽ and the Marschak Interaction Method Assessment
This workshop involves a 4 day intensive learning experience for
Professionals working directly with children and families. This 4
day workshop includes training in using the Marschak Interaction
Method Assessment (a family attachment assessment) and intensive

Workers, Teachers, Adoption Practitioners, Child and Youth workers,

Early Childhood Educators and any other professionals how work

structured therapy which focuses on enhancing attachments. It
promotes self-esteem, language skills, behavioural skills, social
skills as well as enhances relationships between significant others.
Theraplay can be used with a single child, an entire family or with
groups of children. Professionals around the world have been trained
in Theraplay and are using Theraplay in a wide variety of settings
and populations, including: Attachment therapy for foster/adopted
children, Therapy for trauma and abuse victims, Therapy for children
with behavioural and developmental problems, and group settings such
as schools and residential treatment facilities.
The Marschak Interaction Method Assessment (MIM) is a
structured technique for observing and assessing the relationship
between two individuals, for example, biological parent and child,
foster or adoptive parent and child, supportive caregiver and child.
It consists of a series of simple tasks designed to elicit a range
of behaviours in four dimensions.
Learning objectives of this course include:
- Understanding of the history and theory of Theraplay;
- Increased knowledge on the interactional basis of
parent-infant attachment and self-esteem;
- Skill development in the differentiation and use of the four
Theraplay dimensions;
- Knowledge of how Theraplay is used to meet the needs of
children with behaviour problems, foster and adopted children,
autistic children, adolescents, and traumatized children;
- Knowledge of how parents are guided to empathically observe
and participate in Theraplay sessions aimed at fostering better
parent-child attachment.
- Knowledge of how to administer the MIM including methods of
recording non-verbal and verbal behaviours, making inferences
and formulating hypotheses;
- Knowledge of how a MIM report is organized;
- Knowledge of how a feedback session is conducted;
- Knowledge of how the MIM is used as a guideline for planning
treatment.
TheraplayŽ training workshops are intensive, active and
rewarding. The number of participants is limited so that each
person can receive the special attention that makes for a good
training experience. There are opportunities to:
- observe live and/or video taped treatment of a family,
including the assessment via the Marschak Interaction Method,
feedback to the parents, and several Theraplay sessions
- watch videotapes of treatment with a variety of clients
practice the use of Theraplay techniques
- plan how each participant can use Theraplay with their own
clients
4. Intermediate
TheraplayŽ
Intermediate Theraplay involves another 3 days for participants who
have already taken Introduction to Theraplay. It reviews newest
methodology as well as case studies, live client work, DVD clips and
more hands on experiences. The TheraplayŽ Institute (TTI) in Chicago
certifies practitioners in Theraplay and once students have taken
Introduction to Theraplay they may apply to TTI for admittance into
the practicum for full certification. For more information on
Theraplay please refer to
www.theraplay.org.
5.
Group TheraplayŽ
A Theraplay group is an adult-directed, structured play group that
incorporates playful, cooperative and nurturing activities that
enhance the emotional well-being of children. These play groups are
beneficial to all children, not just those with behavioural,
emotional or developmental problems. Trained leaders create an
atmosphere of fun, caring, acceptance and encouragement which allows
children to grow up socially, emotionally and often intellectually
as well. Theraplay groups can include parents or not. When parents
are involved, Theraplay groups can help to support healthy parenting
techniques and assist parents in developing strategies to assist in
their child’s social, emotional and behavioural well being. The
learning objectives of this 6 hour/one day training include
knowledge of:
- How to apply Theraplay principles to group treatment
- How to adapt group Theraplay to different populations
- How to manage resistance and other problems
- The steps toward implementing group sessions within your own
organization
- Skill development in how to use group rules and techniques
TheraplayŽ Group workshops are intensive, active and rewarding.
The number of participants is limited so that each person can
receive the special attention that makes for a good training
experience. There are opportunities to:
- observe videotapes of Theraplay groups
- practice the use of Theraplay techniques
- plan how each participant can use Theraplay with their own
clients
6. Introduction to Play Therapy
